If you’ve just come across our upcoming START TO WRITE courses at the United Arts Club…
There are now three points at which you may begin this course. In recognition of the fact that August is a tricky month for beginning things, I will be welcoming further participants after our 14th August start date, on Tuesdays 21st and 28th August. So if you are mad keen to begin a START TO WRITE ( or return to writing) course now, but 14th August doesn’t work for you, phone 086 1701418 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for details of how to sign up to start on 21st or 28th of this month. In view of the fact that there will be a certain – though small – amount of repetition between the 14th and 21st August meetings, I’ll be giving the course as a 9-week event for fee of 8 weeks. Having flagged the repetition, I should add that it is largely the kind of repeating myself I’d have been at even if there were no newcomers in the room. Some basic principles bear ( and need) endless repetition! (See Ira Glass video under the THOUGHT FROM A WRITING TRAIN button above, for some of those!). As every meeting of every class is tailored to the needs of the group on the night, and as I’m happily bringing 20 years’ experience of teaching writing to each of these meets, we will do and discover new stuff each time we meet, I guarantee! So if you want 9 sessions for the price of 8, with a minimal amount of helpful reinforcing of key ideas from week one to week two, sign up to start tomorrow night and follow through the whole set of dates with us! It will make the course extremely good value.
Phone me to discuss a booking, or book via booking form here on the blogsite. I can take payment via cheque or paypal.
Writing Train Beginners’ Classes will work best for people who want to identify their material, and the forms they like, by writing under direction and ‘reading as writers.’ Alongside this, in a Beginners’ class, you will go through elements of the craft of a number of the short written forms. You will have the opportunity to bring in writing – old and new – for feedback. And to deliver this feedback in the most productive and supportive way, we’ll set up an honest and also gentle workshop element to the meetings.
These are the things I can predict about our eight-week START TO WRITE course. What I can’t foresee is how it will develop your confidence and your voice, your writing friendships and your commitment. But I can let you hear what some students have said after START TO WRITE courses with me:
“What you do here every week is astounding!” Larry Loughney, National Library Creative Writing class Spring 2012.
“I couldn’t have asked for a more inspiring, generous or devoted teacher with whom to begin on this journey.” Helena Nolan, winner of the 2011 Patrick Kavanagh Prize.
Here’s a link to a short article Helena wrote about starting to write in one of my classes:
